Wild Camping in Portugal: A Responsible Guide for Campervan Travelers

Few things beat waking up to the sound of the Atlantic with no one else around. Portugal makes that possible, but wild camping here comes with real responsibilities. Here is how to do it well, so these places stay wild for the next traveller too.

Know where it's allowed

Free camping rules in Portugal changed in recent years, and they are stricter than many travellers expect. Sleeping overnight in a self-contained campervan is tolerated in some areas and clearly forbidden in others, especially inside protected natural parks and along most of the coastline.

Always read the signs when you arrive. When in doubt, use an official aire or a small local campsite. They cost little, often have services for grey water and waste, and they keep you on the right side of local rangers.

Choosing a good spot

A respectful spot is quiet, out of sight, and never on a beach or in a dune system. Arrive late, leave early, and keep your set-up minimal. No awnings, chairs and washing lines spread across a viewpoint.

Apps and offline maps help, but local knowledge is better. A friendly chat at a café or surf shop will often point you somewhere far nicer than any crowd-sourced pin.

Leave it better than you found it

Carry out everything you carry in, including food scraps. Never empty grey or black water onto the ground. Skip open fires entirely in summer, when the wildfire risk along the coast is serious.
