7-Day West Algarve Road Trip from Lisbon - Ultimate Campervan Adventure

By Afonso NetoJanuary 14, 202610 Min Read

A week is just enough to trade Lisbon's hills for the wild west coast and the golden cliffs of the Algarve. This loop keeps the driving relaxed and the swimming spots frequent, with plenty of room to slow down when a place asks you to stay.

Out of the city, down the coast

Leave Lisbon early and point south. The Costa Vicentina unfolds as a string of clifftop villages, surf beaches and natural park that feels worlds away from the capital. Give yourself the first couple of days here rather than rushing to the Algarve proper.

Stops like Sagres, at the south-western tip of Europe, reward an unhurried evening. Park up, walk the headland, and let the sunset do the work.

The best days on this route were never the ones we planned. They were the detours.

Golden cliffs and hidden coves

As you turn east the landscape softens into the honey-coloured cliffs the Algarve is famous for. The best coves are the ones you reach on foot, so trade the busy car parks for a short walk and you will often have the place to yourself.

Balance the coast with a slower afternoon inland. A small market town, a long lunch, and a vineyard make a fine antidote to a week of salt and sand.

Heading home

Loop back toward Lisbon with a night somewhere quiet to break the drive. The beauty of a campervan is that the journey home is still part of the trip, not just the end of it.

The short version

  • Give the wild west coast two full days
  • Reach the quiet coves on foot
  • Mix coast days with a slow afternoon inland
  • Leave a buffer for the places you won't want to leave
